CMCO History

Dating back more than 138 years, Columbus McKinnon combines two different yet complimentary areas of expertise – rigging products and hoists.

Columbus McKinnon started as a chain and rigging manufacturer in 1917 with the merger of McKinnon Chain and the Columbus Chain Company — one of the earliest American suppliers of fire-welded chain, who then developed the electrically welded chain process. In 1928, we incorporated hoist products into our portfolio with the acquisition Chisholm Moore, a company that dates back to 1875 and Chicago’s Moore Manufacturing Company.

Today, Columbus McKinnon is one of the most respected and well-known names in the industry, helping customers address unique and challenging industry needs day after day.

We design and manufacture a large portfolio of durable and reliable products, including powered and manual hoists, rigging products, below-the-hook attachments, cranes, enclosed track systems, actuators and more. We revolutionized the industry with the development of alloy chain, Hammerloks, and the Weston style brake, which is still being utilized on most manual and electric chain hoists today.  Our heritage of innovation continues as we look for new, more efficient ways to help our customers lift and move material.
